Screw Purpose

Yes.  Screw Purpose!

No, I’m not saying you shouldn’t have a purpose.  I’m saying, “Screw it!”  Stop making it your freaking day in, day out focus.  You’re off base totally if it is.

Purpose is not what God asked us to seek for, to focus on, to strive for.  No where did He say that the secret of success was purpose, that the answer to Life’s question is purpose, that at the end of your “a-ha moment” is purpose.  So, then, why are we on a quest for a purpose driven life?

I mean, even older folks are torn up about not knowing their purpose in life.  Christians!  Believers in the Most High God distraught because they don’t know their purpose.  What in the hell?

Your purpose is to live folks!  For God’s sake listen to what He says.  Live your freaking life to the best of your ability while abiding in, trusting in, adhering to Him, the Author and Finisher of your faith.  That’s your doggone purpose!

But, Ray, that’s too simple.

What do you mean?  It’s too simple?  What’s simple about ignoring the status quo of the world’s mantras?  What’s simple about saying, “Screw Purpose!  I just want to live for God!”

This is what I think.  Here is where my rant is coming from or going or whatever!

We’re so focused on having a purpose in life that we are missing our lives.  For some of us, we aren’t even living.  Yep, it’s true though, right?

Today, I had a visit from Momma Love.  She’s my church mom, if you will.  Anywho, she was sharing with me that she’s been praying about her purpose.  She wanted to go back to school but wasn’t sure of what her talents were or what God wanted her to do.  Now, Momma Love is 63 years old, Praise God!  So, she’s already blessed for making it to that age, but to be feeling bad because she didn’t know her purpose.  Pfffbt…  You know I got pissed.

We were checking her email and when she went on her rant I promptly closed the laptop and looked her dead in the eyes.

“That’s this generation’s problem,” I began.

“What’s our problem, baby?” Momma Love giggled.

“We’re too focused on purpose, Momma Love.  You’re running around trying to figure out what God wants you to do when you’re already doing it.  He’s already answered numerous prayers from you.  Who is helping to start yet another church?  Who is an elder yet again at another start-up congregation?  Who, yet again, is in the Pastor’s main council giving advice and helping to lead the way?  You are!  You have a purpose.  You’re living your purpose and you’re missing it because you’re looking for it.  That’s not what God asked you to do!  He said seek first the Kingdom and His righteousness.  He said that HE HAS a purpose for you, a purpose that He knew before you were even formed in the womb.  So live!  Momma Love, you are a blessing to a number of people, too.  All that time you said God is calling you aside to study and pray in the mornings, afternoons, and nights is to build you up, to fill you to overflowing so that you can give without going into your cup.  It’s to keep you fortified and full to give a word in the right season.  Momma Love, live your life like Abraham, like Joseph, like Ezra and Nehemiah, like the disciples and wait for God to tap you on the shoulder and say, ‘Hey, I want you to do something for me.”

That was, of course, the Cliffs Notes’ version of my soapbox sermon.  I mean, I tried to sum it all up at the beginning: Screw Purpose!  God has something way better than that for you.  Live your life.  When He’s ready, He knows how to get your attention to do what He wants.
